Welcome to the very first Issue of the INETA Newsletter!

Message from the Executive Director

INETA’s vision to provide a structured, peer-based organizational, educational, and promotional support to the growing worldwide community of Microsoft® .NET user groups is now a reality. To date 92 user groups around the world, who represent over 34,000 members, have joined INETA. In the near future an INETA Europe will be established and activity in Australia, Latin America, Asia, Japan and India are developing now.

Our thanks to Microsoft: a charter sponsor, for funding some of the initial activities, and supporting the launch of INETA. Thanks also to Brinkster, for providing the hosting and infrastructure for INETA. And to our newsletter committee, chaired by Dave Noderer, for providing us with this first update, with many more to come.

We’re excited to announce the establishment of a Speakers Bureau which includes more than a few of the most well known authors and speakers.  Microsoft recently hosted a two day conference for Speakers Bureau members to make sure that speakers have the most up to date information.

Despite growing sponsorships, we are a volunteer run organization and each committee needs active volunteers.  Please consider donating some of your valuable time to this exciting venture!

As always, we are looking to you, the user group leaders to let us know what you need. Please contact any board member for more information or to volunteer for a committee.

William Evjen Executive Director, INETA

Report on the Milwaukee .NET Users Group Meeting

By Brian Tinkler

President, WI .NET Users Group

I received a dreadful scare, just 2 days before our first Wisconsin .NET Users Group meeting.  Rushing back from a meeting with a client from my day job, I grabbed 2 minutes of free time to check my voice mail.  I had received a call from our scheduled speaker saying that he couldn’t make it.

After a few minutes of expletives, I gathered my composure and began thinking about how I was going to be able to find a replacement.  We had over 100 people registered to come to our first meeting and I had 24 hours to find a replacement speaker.  The outlook was bleak at best.  Was I going to have to cancel our first meeting?  In a moment of desperation, I called one of the INETA Board of Directors.  Twenty minutes later, Doug Seven was booked on a flight from Seattle, WA to Madison, WI.

While I fully support and believe in INETA’s mission of helping User Groups foster a .NET community by offering assistance and resources to community groups that promote and educate their membership in Microsoft's .NET technologies, I never fully grasped how seriously all the members of INETA take that mission.  Through their commitment and relationships, the WI .NET Users Group is alive and well and had one of the best user group meetings ever.

Doug Seven’s presentation on ASP.NET: Advanced DataGrid Techniques left our packed-house of members with their jaws on the floor.  We had an incredible experience for our first User Group meeting and one that will last in the minds of the Wisconsin .NET community for a long time to come.

From Doug Seven:

I would like to express my gratitude to INETA, Brian Tinkler, and the Wisconsin .NET User Group. While I was asked on very short notice to speak at the inaugural meeting of the Wisconsin .NET User Group, the experience was wonderful. As an industry guru I travel and speak to groups quite a bit, and this experience ranks among the best of them.

The travel and accommodations were handled by INETA flawlessly and efficiently. The user group facility was top-of-the-line, including theater style seating, two large projection screens and wireless microphones - better than some conferences I have been to.

Lastly, and most importantly, the users that make up the group were fantastic - 70+ energized, excited, and interested developers, some of which had driven for hours to be there. I had the opportunity to speak to group members after my presentation.

All I can say is that, with the excitement and enthusiasm that I witnessed, I believe the Wisconsin.NET User Group has a wonderful future ahead of them.

Sincerely,

Doug Seven
