Monday October 28th
INETA
will give a session from 6:00 to 6:45 on Monday in Grand Ballroom
Salon D to present information about INETA to conference
attendees. We are looking at this as an opportunity to provide
information on starting and running User Groups. We will be giving
away t-shirts and INETA Start Up Kit CD's.
Seven of the Speakers Bureau speakers
are presenting at ASP Connections, too. Get a preview of some of
the great presentations you can have at your very own user group
meeting!

Workshop Highlights
NonProfitWays
The folks who started NonProfitWays will be talking about this awesome user
group project and how you can get involved. Read more at
www.nonprofitways.com.
Also, check out the article at
www.ASPNETPRO.com about NonProfitWays. Learn more
about how your user group can get involved in this win-win approach to enabling
members to get hands-on .NET experience while helping your community.
Engaging your User Group Members Getting user group
members to actively participate in the functioning of your group, your meetings,
your website, etc. is a BIG topic among user group leaders. We spend a LOT of
time on our user groups. Julia Lerman from
www.vtdotnet.org and Ruth
Walther from
www.dotnetusers.org in Redmond, WA, will start up this roundtable discussion
talking about their own issues and successes and then we will open up the floor
to everyone so we can truly share ideas.
Working with Other User Groups This is also another
big topic. A metro area group can leverage other local user groups as can a
small group reaching out to nearby locales. Brian Tinkler of the
WI.Net Users Group (see
article below on User Group Explosion) will lead this discussion, sharing
strategies that he has implemented in Wisconsin.
The .NET User Group Explosion
Brian Tinkler, President WI .NET Users Group & Co-Chair of INETA UG
Relations Committee
(Brian will be presenting on "Working with Other User Groups"
during our ASP Connections Sessions)
No, this title is no misnomer and no, I’m not referring to explosion
in the sense of a catastrophic event. However, there is really no
other word that is as fitting of a description of what I have seen
happen with the WI .NET Users Group.
Started in a cauldron of .NET enthusiasm at the launch of Visual
Studio .NET, the WI .NET Users Group began with a handful of curious
developers on February 12, 2002 on a stage in Chicago, IL. With 17
unsuspecting Wisconsinites signing their name to a piece of paper,
staking claim to their piece of .NET history, the WI .NET Users
Group began its journey.
Now, just eight months later, the group has grown to 150+ members
and is in discussion with another local .NET users group to add
nearly 100 more. In Wisconsin? Yes. The .NET storm is striking
everywhere and large metropolitan areas are not the only centers for
intense development efforts. With a combination of luck,
determination and enormous support from INETA, the group has managed
to attract developers throughout the state while maintaining no
membership dues and an open door policy to all those interested in
learning more about .NET.
The success of our group is based on being able to deliver what
developers crave – a heavy dose of incredible speakers introducing
and expanding their knowledge of the greatest set of development
tools and technologies on the planet – Visual Studio .NET and the
.NET framework. The helping hands of INETA and Microsoft have both
been significant contributing factors in our groups’ success,
ranging from raffle prizes that have included Visual Studio.NET
Professional Edition, Visual Studio.NET Enterprise Architect
Edition, numerous books from leading publishers and most
importantly, top quality speakers. We have had Doug Seven speak on
“Advanced DataGrid Techniques”, Jason Beres speak on “Mobile
Application Development with .NET”, John Piraino speak on “C#: the
New Sound of .NET Development”, Chris Mayo speak on “Developing
Advanced .NET Applications with WinForms” and we currently have
other “big name” speakers lined up for future meetings including
Billy Hollis in January. Who wouldn’t want to learn from this group
of experts?
Now for the best part…You, too, can leverage this talent to help
grow your respective user groups. How? Login to
www.ineta.org and click on
the “Speakers Bureau” tab. Fill out a quick form, drive awareness of
your top-notch speaker and watch your membership soar! Another great
tip is to look for training companies that have .NET courses. They
are all too interested in sharing what they know about .NET with
your users group and your group will benefit immensely. Another tip
is to involve consulting companies. Again, they are eager to support
an enthusiastic group of .NET advocates and are often willing to
supply meeting facilities, food & beverages and raffle prizes. It’s
really that easy. That’s really INETA…Glad you’ve joined us!
