INETA Meeting at TechEd was a Great
Success!

At our day long meeting on Sunday
Thanks to John Bristowe from the Infrastructure committee for his great
note taking and the following write-up.
INETA held its annual meeting on June 1st, 2003 in Dallas, Texas to coincide
with TechEd 2003. Its purpose was to bring together various representatives of
INETA to discuss present and future work. This year's meeting hosted individuals
from a variety of countries including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, India, Russia,
Peru, and the United States.
Throughout the day, presentations were made by the board of directors, each
representing his/her respective committees. Kicking things off was Bill Evjen,
the executive director of INETA. Bill provided an impressive list of
accomplishments that INETA has achieved in its first year of existence and
highlighted many of its achievements. To date, INETA enrollment stands at over
94,000 members, representing 315 member user groups worldwide. Bill also
announced the nomination of our newest board member, Keith Pleas. Keith is a
liaison to the Speaker's Bureau and an international activities organizer.
Other highlights included:
* Federico Raggi (Microsoft) and Jose Berrios (INETA) discussed the recent
explosion of .NET User Groups in Latin America (LATAM), highlighting key
initiatives such as the Five Star Developer Program and Panorama Box.
* Dave Noderer (Florida) provided a review of the work being done by the User
Group Relations Committee. Dave and company are responsible for keeping everyone
happy.
* Farhan Muhammad (Twin Cities, MN) provided a synopsis of the Speakers
Bureau Committee. This committee is responsible for getting .NET rock stars to
user groups.
* Brian Loesgen (San Diego, CA) reviewed some of the goals of the Marketing
and Sponsorship Committee. These guys keep the INETA engine financed and heard.
* Keith Franklin (Chicago, IL) provided an overview of what the
Infrastructure Committee is currently working on. This crew keeps the INETA
engine running.
* Kevin Briody and Eric Ewing of Microsoft discussed Microsoft's role in the
developer community.
* Ruth Walther provided a run-through of the ASP.NET Community Starter Kit. A
great kit for getting user groups up-and-running with their Web sites.
* Oliver Nguyen (Bay Area, CA) and Devin Rader (St. Louis, MI) gave a
presentation of how to effectively promote a user group.
* Scott Robertson (Los Angeles, CA) and Julie Lerman (Vermont) presented a
talk on how to draw sponsorship for a User Group.
Most attendees were completely exhausted by the end of the meeting. However,
like true champions, we pushed on through to the party that followed afterward.

User Group Relations
Committee is growing
In order to accommodate the rapid growth of
INETA, the User Group Relations Committee is expanding and reorganizing its
ranks. We are bringing more people on board to act as liaisons to our user group
members. Our goal is to make sure that all of you have a personal contact with
INETA. In the U.S., each person is assigned a handful of states in their own
area. We also have two people assigned to Canada. Watch for emails from these
committee members introducing themselves. Next month we will list the committee
members and their assignments in this newsletter.
Thanks to new committee member, Manny Dennis,
leader of Know.NET in New Orleans,
LA for taking on the much needed role of Assistant Editor for this newsletter.

Free
ListServ for your User Group
INETA Speaker Steven Smith, who also runs the
ASPAlliance online
community has set up a place for free mailing list listservs for
your user group. Once the Mailing List has been created for your
group, members can sign up to participate in it and they will have
an easy way of communicating with each other.
The mailing lists will be listed on the ASPAlliance site
here, which could allow another avenue for potential
members to find out about the user group (since the host, AspAdvice gets a lot
of traffic).
If you'd like a list for your user group, please contact Steve at
ssmith@aspalliance.com. If desired,
the lists can be moderated to protect against SPAM, and in any event your
members' emails will not be used for any other purpose.

making this joke! The new version of
Web Matrix is
available. Initial reviews are great. Check it out!
In
the INETA online Forums
There have been some interesting chats in the INETA forums. User
Group Leaders have discussed how to get people to RSVP for meetings,
sharing books in their libraries, and the Community Starter Kit.
There was also a silly thread about Dave Totzke's (www.cttdnug.org)
mission to have more posts in the forums than Julie Lerman (www.vtdotnet.org).
These are two very talkative people, so it is a tough
contest! All in good fun!!
As
of the morning of June 12th here is the status.Julie claims "Not
fair!" over Dave's sleazy use of "how do I get more posts than
Julie" messages just to bolster up the count.
Keep
those presentations coming into the INETA Repository!
The INETA repository has already proved to be a great resource for
many user group leaders. Keep the content coming! Upload
presentations and other documents you would like to share with your
fellow UG Leaders.
Community Starter Kit in Full Release
The Community Starter Kit is no longer in Beta. A number of changes have been
made. Note that you can not upgrade directly from the beta to the full release
mode. Read more
here and don't forget there is a forum especially dedicated to the CSK on
the www.asp.net website
here.
