INETA is a volunteer organization that depends on funding from various sources in order to provide services to our user groups. As you may know, Microsoft is our biggest single funding source. One of my major responsibilities, as Treasurer for INETA, is to prepare our annual budget submission to Microsoft. We are just now finalizing our programs for the new Microsoft fiscal year began July 1. I'd like to share with you the programs we have planned.

Speakers Bureau INETA Noram: Building on the very successful existing program we will be maintaining the allocation of 2 speakers per user group in a 12 month period.

Speakers Bureau, Regional: Working in conjunction with CodeZone and the MVP program we are adding regional speakers, offering greater benefits to our user groups and building a broader team of speaker talent.

Virtual Speakers and User Groups: Virtual speakers and user groups will allow us to significantly broaden our reach to a wider audience leveraging our speaker and INETA Live asset base.

INETA Website: With the release of INETA's new website, this program leverages delivery of content and social interaction to continue growing a vibrant community.

INETA Live: INETA Live has become a tool that allows us to highlight the efforts of our multiple project teams, under one strong brand to market to the community. During the next year, we will be expanding our participation outside of the core Live team to greatly increase our content.

Community Champions: This program specifically recognizes the leadership effort that it takes to run a successful user group community. It provides recognition and reward to user group leaders for their excellent efforts.

INETA Authors: This new program facilitates authoring opportunities for INETA members with book and magazine publishers.

Community Outreach: The Community Outreach program is all about extending the reach of existing INETA and CodeZone audiences and increasing numbers. It is focused on building awareness and membership participation in existing user group programs within the developer community.

Continuing Programs: Newsletter, user group recognition, and membership mentor programs facilitate helping us stay in contact and extend our membership reach. ________________________________________

Summary - Extending Our Reach in FY 2009:

The INETA FY 2009 proposed projects provide the resources to significantly extend our reach to the broader development community with meaningful, quality programs, speakers and content. As always, we value feedback from leaders and members of user groups. If you have any questions, ideas, or concerns please feel free to contact the Board at noram.board@ineta.org.

 Community Champions Winners Announced
*

INETA Community Award Winners

In April, we announced the launch of the INETA Community Champions Program to recognize the efforts of user group leaders across North America. The response was overwhelming. Over 100 community leaders have participated in the program since its launch. As of the close of the first award cycle, ten outstanding individuals had been nominated for the lifetime Community Excellence Award and over 1000 community related activities had been entered by the Community Champions Award participants.

...drum roll please. The winners of the Q2 2008 INETA Community Awards programs are:

Community Excellence Award Recipient: David McCarter

We are honored to announce that the next Community Excellence Award goes to David McCarter! David, is a Microsoft MVP and started the San Diego .NET Developers Group over 14 years ago. He is also the editor-in-chief of dotNetTips.com, a web site dedicated to helping programmers in all aspects of programming. In addition, David can often be found lecturing at colleges, high schools, conferences such as Code Camp, VSLive, and Microsoft DevDays. He is an accomplished author and teaches at the University of California, San Diego. David's efforts show a consistent dedication to building a solid foundation for the San Diego development community. As Woody Pewitt, a Southern California/Hawaii DE, stated, "David is a prime example of what the INETA Community Excellence Award is all about! " We could not agree more.

The Community Excellence Award is a semi-annual award. Nominations for the next award are currently being accepted from July 1, 2008 thru December 31, 2008. For additional information, please go to Community Excellence Award section of the INETA web site.

Community Champion Awards

The Community Champions Awards generated over 2 million points submitted by eligible participants. This is a tremendous achievement and we want to thank everyone for taking the time to submit all of their activities. We chose the top ten participants based on total points accumulated for their contributions within the developer community. We are excited to announce that the following community leaders are the first recipients of the annual Community Champions Award:
  • Sujata Devraj
  • Judith B. Calla
  • Adnan Masood
  • Joseph Guadagno
  • Philip Wolfe
  • Jess Chadwick
  • Christopher Brandsma
  • Lou Vega
  • Kristin Ferrier
  • Brian Hendrson

Special thanks to everyone who took the time and energy to participate in this program. Keep contributing to your local developer community and submit your activities through the Champs program. This is your chance to show the world what community leadership is all about and to gain some of the recognition that you deserve! The next award cycle started on July 1, 2008 and will continue to September 30, 2008. All activities which take place from Oct 1, 2007 thru Sept 30, 2008 to be eligible for the Q3 2008 awards. For additional information, please go to Community Champions Award section of the INETA web site.

Congratulations to our winners!

You have shown us what a truly exceptional group of individuals you are. Selflessly dedicated is the primary attribute that comes to mind. Please continue to keep doing what you are doing to support your local communities. For our part, we will continue to find ways to support and promote your effects. We salute you!

Inland Empire .Net User Group Launches the Most Valuable Member Program

James Johnson's Inland Empire .Net User Group has kicked off the Most Valuable Member program just this past July.  It has generated quite a buzz and offers a great way to incentive members of his user group to get involved.   If you would like to find out what all of the buzz is about, please read the various blog posts listed below.  This is a program definitely worth mentioning because it is an innovative way to help reward people that help to run his user group, a goal that many of User Groups strive for a do not reach often enough.  Kudos to you, James, for this great innovation!

Nothing good ever happens after midnight

Below is Scott Fletchers blog on this:
A coworker of mine gave me some sage advice that his grandmother once gave him. It is applicable to nearly every aspect of our lives: "Nothing good ever happens after midnight."

This past week, I pulled an all-nighter. I am old enough to know better, but I did it anyway. I hadn't planned on staying up all night, but the clock kept turning and the problem kept... not getting fixed. I solved three of the four problems, but the fourth one continued to elude me. I was spent. I knew better than to stay up this late. I had to go home and get some sleep. The comic tells the rest of the story.

 MSDN Ramp Up
*

Ever have problems finding resources through MSDN when attempting to learn about a new technology? There is so much information out there that it's often not simple or intuitive to find what you're looking for. MSDN recently launch a new program, rampup, which has been specifically designed to help developers more easily access the materials they need to quickly get up to speed on a topic.

What's exciting about rampup is that the training materials for each track are packaged into a simple step-by-step process that is geared towards increasing your knowledge in a fun, interact way. The new Visual Studio 2008 track allows you to choose between Visual Basic 2008 and Visual C# 3.0. You are guided through a 12 step process using white papers, videos and labs. As an added bonus, once you complete a track, the program offers incentives (50% off exam vouchers and e-Learning courses) towards advancing your skill set even further.

The potential of this program to become a favorite learning tool promises to be high as new tracks are continuously added. Take a few minutes to check it out at www.msdn.com/rampup.

A Word from the Marketing Team
*

RaslphRivas I just came back from a l-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g (ok, it was three weeks) vacation. I took with my family, putting my user group on hiatus as I drove from Chicago to Seattle, back again and then to New York and back again.  I did all the driving and if that's not enough to know what a trucker feels like, it at least lets me sympathize with one better.  I sort of did the "Great American Road trip" before in my college years and was struck by the differences I have seen from back then to now ... I mean, it's no wonder we can't easily shake our dependence on oil. Driving is so interesting and there seems to be more and more fun and compelling things to see plus more and more services so standardized that making these long trips are a lot more pleasant than I remember.

This is sort of how it is like with INETA for me these days remembering back to the first year. Back then the innovation was the speaker's bureau and how any member group could get just about any speaker, many of them the cream of the crop normally reserved for those big product launches, those huge-hall Tech Ed sessions or for a hefty fee when they come along with that consulting package for your corporate project.  The web site was simple enough and useful back then and we pretty much had enough to make our user groups work better.

Just looking at Mike Vincent's list of things INETA is doing now just highlights how much more interesting and fun it is for us these days. I know we should be thanking our sponsors who are certainly instrumental in making these new things available for us much as the Federal Government put the money into the original highways.  But in the end, the "attractions" are all local and make every stop on the road worth staying around at for hours or even days at a time.  I equate those local resources that make that happen to our volunteers.  The sponsors might hand us oodles of cash and even hire a large team but they are not "local" ... they are not us!  In the end we make all this come to life or die on the vine if we don't use it.  I like the life part and feel very connected when I help out.  I make my "local" area more interesting and thanks to the others, the rest of it is also compelling and fun to "stop by and enjoy."

Unlike driving, at least we don't have gas prices to deal with here.  So enjoy the sights and think about being part of our "local" action.
