The INETA community is built by the involvement and efforts that many individuals make in their local, regional, and the broader .NET Development Community. In many cases, members' involvement in the community has in no small part contributed to recognition for MVP and Regional Director Awards. Exposure through such involvement has also helped many people to advance their careers to more senior positions and new job opportunities.
While it's great to see the success of our community, it's often bitter sweet. For example, over the years a number of our speakers and volunteers have been hired by Microsoft, now including INETA President and Speaker Bureau member Daniel Egan.
We're very excited for Daniel who has accepted a Developer Evangelist position with Microsoft, and has stepped down as President of INETA North America. While we congratulate Daniel on this great opportunity, we'll miss his leadership and direct involvement in the organization. Fortunately in the Developer Evangelist role, Daniel will continue to be heavily involved in community and user groups throughout the South Western US.
In Daniel's place, I am honored to have been elected to the position of President and will immediately be stepping into the role. There is a lot going on right now as our teams work to roll out a variety of new projects this fall, while continuing to keep the existing projects running smoothly. We will be leaning on some of our key volunteers and Assistant VP's to help cover the vacancies until we refill our slate of Directors in elections next spring.
As I transition from my role on the Technology team, I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to get more involved with INETA. We're an organization of volunteers that achieves success through the hard work and creativity of our diverse base of volunteers and members. We have many opportunities on our ongoing projects where new volunteers are continually needed. From writing ASP.NET and Silverlight code, to helping our marketing team we have a lot of exciting opportunities for you to get involved. I am looking forward to many more of you getting involved in building our growing community, and seeing where the future may lead us!

Product Team Meetings
By Mike Vincent
In mid September, I, along with other INETA NorAm board members, had the pleasure of meeting with several product teams at Microsoft while in Redmond for an INETA board of directors meeting. Our objective was to explore ways in which we can work more closely together to bring additional information and content to our user groups and help the product teams effectively reach the developer community.
In our product team meetings, we shared our overall INETA Programs for MSFT FY 09 including speakers bureau, regional speakers, virtual presentations and INETA Live as well as regular communications through our newsletter. We will be adding product focus to our newsletters. Also, a common thread for INETA and the product teams is one of measurement.
Product group teams we met with included Visual Studio Languages (C#, VB), Visual Studio Team System, Dynamic Languages (IronPython, IronRuby, DLR), VSX (extensibility, ecosystem and the SDK), ASP .NET, Patterns and Practices, and Virtual Earth. Over the next couple of months we'll be working out some specific programs for our user group community.

"We Are Microsoft" Charity Challenge Weekend Have you ever wanted to get recognized by your peers for building a really cool application? How about if you could help someone in need at the same time? That is the mission of the "We Are Microsoft Charity Challenge Weekend". On January 16-18, 2009 an enthusiastic group of volunteer developers from the south central part of the US will descend on
BravoTECH (http://www.bravotech.com) in Dallas, Texas. At the end of this 72 hour coding marathon, 20 charities will have new ASP.NET applications.
Toi Wright(toi.wright@onestopdesigns.com), the organizer of this event, president and founder of the local
ASP.NET UG (http://www.dallasasp.net) and a Microsoft MVP award recipient, said that this was our chance to "donate our time and talents for the benefit of the community". She went on to explain that this is the second time that they are having this event.
Chris Koenig (http://blogs.msdn.com/chkoenig), the Microsoft Developer Evangelist for the region, told me that he came up with the idea, talked about it with Toi and she picked up the ball and ran with it. Toi said
"as the mother of a child with special needs I know how difficult it is for these charities to get funding, and nothing gets budgeted for IT spending, let alone IT development. With this project, we have the ability to use our specialized skills to help them solve their business problems."They have a great group of volunteer business analysts, developers, designers, DBA's and event staff that will be helping out before, during and after the event to ensure that the charities get great applications. Before the event the business analysts will meet with each of the charities to dig into the business problem that the charity needs the software to solve. From that point the analyst will prepare requirements that will be loaded into Team Foundation Server (donated by
Notion Solutions, http://www.notionsolutions.com). Over the weekend of the event the developers, designers and DBA's will build the applications utilizing client tools donated to the charities by Microsoft, controls donated by Telerik, Infragistics, ComponentArt and others. If the charity needs hosting,
Verio (http://www.verio.com) will be on hand with donated hosting accounts and tech support. Finally voting will take place to determine which team built the best application.
Since this was such a great success last year, two other groups have already run their own events, the
Ann Arbor Give Camp (http://www.annarborgivecamp.org) and
Coders for Charities(http://coders4charities.org). In addition to the event in Dallas, there are two other events currently scheduled:
Twin Cities Give Camp (http://twincitiesgivecamp.org) and
Indy Give Camp (http://indygivecamp.org). So, if you are in the Dallas area and want to help, go to the website (http://wearemicrosoft.com) and toss your name into the hat. If you want to run a Give Camp in your area, go to http://givecamp.org or contact
Chris Koenig(Chris.Koenig@microsoft.com). President Bush in a recent talk about volunteer service said "You know, there's an old adage that says, you can bring hope to the lives of others, but the life you enrich the most will probably be your own." |
